In memory of Aureliano's ice.
Published 2011“…Going through the chain of events leading to the fateful encounter, he does not remember the acrobats with gold-capped teeth or the jugglers with six arms, nor the thousand more inventions so ingenious and unusual that his father wanted to invent a memory machine so that he could remember them all; in the critical moments right before his death, the other events are fleeting, yet “for the first time since his youth he knowingly fell into a trap of nostalgia and relived that prodigious afternoon of the gypsies when his father took him to see ice” (García Márquez 266-267). …”

Antiferromagnetic half-skyrmions and bimerons at room temperature
Published 2021“…Here we realize a family of topological antiferromagnetic spin textures in α-Fe2O3—an Earth-abundant oxide insulator—capped with a platinum overlayer. By exploiting a first-order analogue of the Kibble–Zurek mechanism20,21, we stabilize exotic merons and antimerons (half-skyrmions)8 and their pairs (bimerons)16,22, which can be erased by magnetic fields and regenerated by temperature cycling. …”

On the largest product-free subsets of the alternating groups
Published 2024“…We solve this problem for large n $n$ , showing that the maximum size is achieved by the previously conjectured extremal examples, namely families of the form { π : π ( x ) ∈ I , π ( I ) ∩ I = ∅ } $\left \{ \pi :\,\pi (x)\in I, \pi (I)\cap I=\varnothing \right \} $ and their inverses. …”

Comparison of models to predict incident chronic liver disease: a systematic review and external validation in Chinese adults
Published 2024“…Models with high discrimination (C-index ≥ 0.70) in CKB were as follows: (1) general population: Li-2018 and Wen 1–2012 for HCC, CLivD score (non-lab and lab) and dAAR for CLD; (2) hepatitis B virus (HBV) infected individuals: Cao-2021 for HCC and CAP-B for CLD. Inferring passenger responses to urban rail disruptions using smart card data: A probabilistic framework
Published 2024“…This study proposes a probabilistic framework to infer passengers’ responses to unplanned urban rail service disruptions using smart card data in tap-in-only public transit systems. We first identify 19 possible response behaviors that passengers may have based on their decision-making times and locations (i.e, the stage of their trips when an incident happened), including transferring to a bus line, canceling trips, waiting, delaying departure time, etc. …”

The GCSE attainment gap: assessing the influence of permanent school exclusion
Published 2025“…Using the National Pupil Database and a full cohort of UK pupils (N=590,092), our analysis tracked a sample of 1,490 pupils permanently excluded in year 11 of the English education system in 2018/19. Using capped GCSE points as the academic attainment variable, we find that permanently excluded pupil scores were nearly 25 points lower than their non-permanently excluded peers. …”
