Bond and electronic relaxation dynamics of graphene, gold clusters, and water ice by Zhang, Xi

    Published 2013
“…The hidden force opposing H2O compression behind the repulsion between nonbonding lone pair and bonding pair of hydrogen bond was revealed by theoretical analysis and molecular dynamics (MD) and ab initio MD calculations: i) the compression shortens and strengthens the intermolecular ‘‘O2- : H+/p’’ lone-pair and stretching phonons (<400 cm-1) are thus stiffened; ii) the repulsion pushes the bonding electron pair away from the H+/p and hence elongates and weakens the ‘‘H+/p–O2-” bond, making stretching phonons (>3000 cm-1) softened upon compression. Three springs model was proposed to build up the fundamental physical model of ‘‘O2- : H+/p–O2-” bond, in order to explain the complicated and anomalous behavior of water and ice. …”

Complexities of the San Andreas fault near San Gorgonio Pass : implications for large earthquakes by Yule, Doug, Sieh, Kerry

    Published 2012
“…The pattern of crustal seismicity beneath these structures includes a 5–8 km high east-west striking step in the base of crustal seismicity, which corresponds to the downdip limit of rupture of the 1986 North Palm Springs earthquake. We infer that this step has been produced by slip on the linked San Gorgonio Pass-Garnet Hill-Coachella Valley Banning (SGP-GH-CVB) fault. …”

A micromechanical model based on hypersingular integro-differential equations for analyzing micro-crazed interfaces between dissimilar elastic materials by Wang, Xue, Ang, Whye Teong, Fan, Hui

    Published 2022
“…The effective stiffness is an important quantity needed for expressing the interfacial conditions in the spring-like macro-model of soft interfaces. Specific case studies are conducted to gain physical insights into how the effective stiffness of the interface may be influenced by the details of the interfacial micro-crazes.…”
