Cultural construction of success and epistemic motives moderate American-Chinese differences in reward allocation biases
Published 2013“…In a study comparing the reward allocation biases of Americans and Chinese in different group outcome conditions, the authors showed that the abovementioned cultural difference is found (a) only for culturally congruent success experience (attaining approach goals for Americans and avoidance goals for Chinese) and (b) among individuals who are motivated by the need for cognitive closure to exhibit culturally typical responses. This finding has important implications for understanding the dynamic nature of cultural influences on social behaviors.…”

Arsenene nanoribbon edge-resolved strong magnetism
Published 2020“…Consistency between bond-order-length-strength correlation (BOLS) theory and density functional theory (DFT) calculations verified that: (i) the edge bond contraction of 9.54% deepened the edge potential well of AsNR, (ii) a net charge of 0.06 e- transferred from the inner region to the edge; and (iii) the edge quantum well polarized the unpaired electron and the net spin (antiferromagnetic or ferromagnetic depending on the width) is localized at the zigzag edge. The finding sheds a light on applications of AsNR in magnetic storage devices.…”

Singapore's road to normalization : an evaluation of the Singapore government's COVID-19 crisis communication efforts
Published 2021“…Through a mixed-methods sequential explanatory design, this paper evaluates the satisfaction levels and limitations pertaining to the COVID- 19 measures implemented and the effectiveness and adequacy of the government’s communication with Singapore residents. The findings reveal that while participants were generally satisfied with the government’s crisis communication efforts, a significant number of them pointed out a key weakness in the government’s communication in the area of empathy-the government has not done enough in this aspect. …”

Developing student feedback literacy through self and peer assessment interventions
Published 2021“…This paper therefore examines student feedback capabilities in the context of an undergraduate course intervention based on an empirically based feedback literacy framework. 237 student journals written in response to self and peer feedback information were coded for student feedback literacy features and the effectiveness of pedagogical approaches for building the needed capabilities. Findings highlight the presence, extent and trajectories of feedback capabilities over time within the course. …”

Computational methods for the assessment of empathic synchrony
Published 2021“…We adopted physynch to study the synchrony of the electrodermal activity in 61 male-female dyads with different types of relationship: strangers (18 dyads), friends (23 dyads) and lovers (20 dyads). The findings confirm previous results on Heart Rate Variability synchrony and suggest that synchrony is influenced by the type of relationship and is stronger in dyads of strangers. physynch is made available for download and use for researchers interested in measuring physiological synchrony.…”

Who attacks America? Islamist attacks on the American homeland
Published 2022“…In this article, the author evaluates a number of proposed causes of terrorism against the empirical record of 60 individuals who, claiming to have been motivated by their understanding of Islam, have plotted or carried out attacks against the American homeland. The analysis finds that while many theories of terrorism fail to explain the phenomenon of Islamist, anti-American terrorism, these terrorists do share a few traits, namely that they tend to be well-educated, young men reared in countries characterized by government repression, many of which happen to be security partners of the United States. …”

Hamiltonian non-Hermicity: accurate dynamics with the multiple Davydov D2 Ansätze
Published 2024“…As illustrative examples, three systems of interest have been studied, a non-Hermitian system of dissipative Landau-Zener transitions, a non-Hermitian multimode Jaynes-Cummings model, and a dissipative Holstein-Tavis-Cummings model, all of which are shown to be effectively described by the mDA method. Our findings high light the versatility of the mDA as a powerful numerical tool for investigating complex many-body non-Hermitian systems, which can be extended to explore diverse phenomena such as skin effects, excited-state dynamics, and spectral topology in the non-Hermitian field.…”
