From mixed embeddedness to transnational mixed embeddedness
Published 2018“…Design/methodology/approach Interviews with the owner managers of a sample 24 Vietnamese businesses in London were undertaken to develop an understanding of how micro (individual resources: social, financial and cultural/human capital, and history of migration), meso (local, regional and national markets) and macro (politico-institutional) factors in the UK and overseas influenced business development. Findings The findings illustrate how business development is influenced not just by the interaction of the local (UK) opportunity structure and the entrepreneur’s resources, as suggested by the mixed embeddedness thesis, but also by institutional regimes, economies and markets in key countries of the diaspora, and the interaction of these. …”

Published 2024“…The current study employed a mixed-methods approach using classroom observations, focus group discussions, students’ pre- and post-tests and anonymous learning journals to explore the impact of translanguaging and English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) on students’ writing performance when a multilingual approach towards comprehension in assessment is used with learners in higher education in the UK Findings indicated that students overall had a very positive attitude towards translanguaging and ELF in terms of a multilingual approach towards comprehension in assessment as they facilitated content and language learning and enhanced students’ intercultural and multilingual awareness Moreover, they had a significant impact on students’ academic performance Finally, the article argues that monolingual ideologies should be abandoned due to the increasing drive towards globalization in Higher Education…”
