Energy waste: the challenge of decarbonising office buildings
Published 2024“…These gaps are divided into three interventional areas: occupancy, thermal comfort, and building characteristics. The findings also demonstrate the opportunity to mitigate energy waste by integrating a better understanding of the occupancy patterns in spaces (1), real-time thermal comfort satisfaction of occupants (2), and the combination of lower centralised thermal requirements with individual environmental control systems (3). …”

Genetic, natal, and spatial drivers of social phenotypes in wild great tits
Published 2024“…Centrality showed heritability up to 10% in one of 3 years sampled, whereas betweenness showed none, indicating modest genetic variation in individual sociability, but not group-switching tendencies. These findings suggest a small, albeit detectable, genetic basis for individual sociality but pronounced spatial effects.…”

Diagnostic accuracy of point-of-care lung ultrasound for community-acquired pneumonia in children in ambulatory settings: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Published 2024“…</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>The six studies included in this systematic review described point-of-care lung ultrasound performed primarily by paediatric emergency medicine clinicians on a total of 1099 paediatric patients, with a reference standard of chest radiography or chest radiography with clinical findings. The majority of included studies lacked clarity on training for the index test with potential bias around flow and timing of testing. …”

PRMT5 controls the innate immune response
Published 2024“…Although additional experiments are required to precisely identify the dsRNA-producing intronic regions, our results support the role of the PRMT5-E2F1 axis in modulating immune responses through the regulation of RNA splicing. The findings suggest that inhibiting PRMT5 may enhance the IFN response in cancer cells, potentially improving the efficacy of existing immunotherapies.…”

A realist evaluation to explain and understand the role of paramedics in primary care
Published 2025“…Results: The culmination of findings from each phase led to the development of a final programme theory, comprising of 50 context-mechanism-outcome configurations (CMOCs) encompassing three conceptual categories: Expectations associated with paramedics in primary care, the transition of paramedics into primary care roles, and the roles and responsibilities of paramedics in primary care. …”

The schooling of irregular migrant children in Canada
Published 2017“…Then, arguments put forward by public authorities in Canada for extending or limiting schooling rights are analysed and compared with the dominant normative frameworks in the theoretical literature. This research finds that public authorities at the sub-state level made use of normative arguments that fall outside common theoretical approaches in moral and political theory. …”

DNA-damage orchestrates self-renewal and differentiation via reciprocal p53 family and Hippo/Wnt/TGF-β pathway activation in embryonic stem cells
Published 2025“…Here we show the impact of ionizing irradiation on the maintenance and early differentiation of mouse embryonic stem cells (ESCs). Our findings demonstrate that irradiation induces the upregulation of the p53 family genes, including p53, p63, and p73, resulting in elevated expression of the E3 ubiquitin ligases Itch and Trim32. …”

Studying the metal sites of metallo-proteins by electrochemistry and spectroelectrochemistry
Published 2024“…This technique was applied to study the [FeFe] hydrogenase from <em>Desulfovibrio desulfuricans</em> (<em>Dd</em>HydAB), serving as a model to explore application of this technique to oxygen-sensitive samples with intricate active sites that have the additional complication of catalysing proton reduction (H2 evolution). The findings demonstrated that ECIRM is particularly effective in elucidating the complex redox dynamics and active site changes under experimentally challenging conditions.…”

Numerical investigations of detonation reinitiation and failure modes from Mach reflection
Published 2025“…From different geometric parameters of the obstacle, we observe different detonation propagation modes after Mach reflection: detonation reinitiation characterized by the transverse detonation waves, decaying shock decoupled with flame, and inert shock with no ignition corresponding well to the experimental findings. Relying on the high resolution of the numerical simulations, we are able to obtain critical information about the detonation wave formation processes, and the corresponding detailed mechanisms are analyzed for various modes. …”

Resolution of proteotoxic stress in the endoplasmic reticulum by ubiquitin ligase complexes
Published 2016“…To understand the contribution of ER E3s to cellular and organelle homeostasis, this study used mass spectrometry of purified E3 complexes to identify cofactors and build interaction networks of ER-resident E3s. These findings will form the foundation for investigating the biological roles of these ubiquitin ligases. …”

The attribution of February extremes over North America: a forecast-based storyline study
Published 2024“…In the globally averaged results, increasing CO2 concentrations lead to distinct warming signals at the surface, resulting mainly from diabatic heating. Our study finds that CO2-induced warming eventually affects the possibility of extreme events in North America, quantifying the impact of anthropogenic forcing over less than a week’s forecast simulation. …”

Local rainfall is more likely than distant thunderstorms to affect movement behaviour in Northern Kenyan elephants
Published 2024“…While some abrupt movement changes occurred ahead of local wet periods, they were only particularly frequent shortly following the onset of wet periods. These findings do not concur with reports of Namibian elephants that generally changed their movement behaviour preceding local rainfall, and the additional exploration of individual behaviours in the present study likewise did not provide compelling evidence of a generic reliance on remote thunder cues by Northern-Kenyan elephants. …”
