Genetic, natal, and spatial drivers of social phenotypes in wild great tits
Published 2024“…Centrality showed heritability up to 10% in one of 3 years sampled, whereas betweenness showed none, indicating modest genetic variation in individual sociability, but not group-switching tendencies. These findings suggest a small, albeit detectable, genetic basis for individual sociality but pronounced spatial effects.…”

Adjustable wind selectivity in shearwaters implies knowledge of the foraging landscape
Published 2025“…Many seabirds, for example, are adapted to use winds to travel long distances at low energetic cost1,2,3 but also potentially benefit from targeting specific foraging hotspots.4,5,6 To investigate how an animal makes foraging decisions, given the inevitable trade-off between these factors, we tracked over 600 foraging trips of breeding Manx shearwaters (Puffinus puffinus; N = 218 individuals) using GPS accelerometers. …”

Territorial movements of African lions: can waterholes shape multiple central-place territories in a savanna ecosystem?
Published 2025“…However, we found that both female and male lions repeatedly moved along straight paths between the waterholes located both in the core and in the periphery of their territories, potentially to defend multiple central-place territories driven by the distribution of waterholes in the landscape. These findings illustrate a case where territorial animals specifically mark feeding sites, increasing the renewal of territorial cues at these key places, potentially using long-distance territorial cues (i.e., vocalizations) to mark uncovered areas, and thereby reducing the cost of patrolling large territories. …”
