Uncertainty-Inclusive Contrastive Learning for Leveraging Synthetic Images
Published 2024“…Across three different finegrained classification datasets, we find that the learned representation space generated by the UniCon loss function leads to significantly improved downstream classification performance in comparison to supervised contrastive learning baselines.…”

Optimization under ecological realism reproduces signatures of human speech perception
Published 2024“…In this paper, we address this question by comprehensively testing a neural network model trained in ecological conditions across a large set of speech manipulations, comparing its behavior to that of humans. We find that training in ecological conditions yields a fairly good overall match to human behavior, with some discrepancies that can be largely resolved by training specifically on these conditions. …”

Novel genetic associations for blood pressure identified via gene-alcohol interaction in up to 570K individuals across multiple ancestries
Published 2020“…Several genes in these loci (e.g., PINX1, GATA4, BLK, FTO and GABBR2) have been previously reported to be associated with alcohol consumption. These findings provide insights into the role of alcohol consumption in the genetic architecture of hypertension.…”

Small-island interactions: pottery from Roman Malta
Published 2015“…In the first instance, a detailed study of three complete and new ceramic assemblages, including amphorae, fine, cooking and coarse wares, was undertaken. The opportunity to quantify identifiable imports and compare them with local products—the first of its kind for fine, cooking and coarse wares—provided valuable proxy data for comparing Malta with neighbouring islands and centres, and demonstrated what proportion of ceramic vessels were locally supplied, and how these changed over time. …”

Synthesis of polymeric materials derived from abundant natural feedstocks using non-toxic heavy metals
Published 2024“…<p>The aims of this Thesis were: firstly, to develop new di(amido)siloxane complexes using relatively non-toxic bismuth and scandium metals, and secondly, to examine the activity of the bismuth compounds in ring-opening polymerisation (ROP) and small molecule activation reactions.…”

The inference-boundary model reinterpreting theme and rheme
Published 2013“…The Hallidayan notions of theme and rheme pose an interesting challenge to linguists in their attempts to pin them down more specifically. This paper argues that since the thematic structure of the clause organises it as a message, a useful starting point in theme–rheme research is an understanding of how clausal messages are typically processed by language users. …”

The effects of processing conditions on the morphology of single conjugated polymers.
Published 2010“…Drop-cast single chains were proposed to either retain its extended conformation in CHCl3 solution, or adopt an ordered structure with hair-pin loops, giving rise to two corresponding distinct types of intensity traces. …”

Spontaneous symmetry breaking of an optical polarization state in a polarization-selective nonlinear reson
Published 2024“…We pump the vapor cell with horizontally polarized light while the vertical polarization, which is initially in the vacuum state, is resonated in a ring cavity. Microscopic field fluctuations in this mode experience cumulative gain due to the compound action of amplification due to the self-rotation and feedback through the resonator, eventually acquiring a macroscopic magnitude akin to an optical parametric oscillator. …”
