Mechanistic Studies of Interfacial Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer to Molecularly Defined Surface Sites
Published 2024“…With these observations we construct a mechanistic model in which I-PCET is not a single step, but a multi-step reaction sequence in which elementary I-PCET is gated by an ion exchange reaction between proton donor/acceptor species and proton-neutral supporting electrolyte at the electrode-electrolyte interface. These findings demonstrate how supporting electrolyte can be leveraged as a design parameter to independently control electrolyte pH and the rates of I-PCET-based reactions.…”

Interaction of TiO2 and ZnO NPs with human skin cells
Published 2019“…Therefore, the goal of this study is to assess the physiological effects of TiO2 and ZnO NPs interactions with primary human epidermal keratinocytes and dermal fibroblasts, with attention to accurate dosimetry measurements and particle solubility considerations. Since the current findings on NPs interaction with skin cells are mostly based on 2D monolayer cell culture and animal models, in this study, 3D human skin explants have also been used to better understand the effects of NPs in the skin tissue. …”

Analysis of lava flow impacts for use in risk assessments
Published 2023“…Along with the 2018 Kīlauea assessment, I used this compiled dataset to assess relationships between lava flow thickness as a proxy for hazard intensity and damage severity, presenting the first empirically-derived and non-linear fragility functions for lava flow structure damage, for different structure types. The findings show a recent increase in recorded impact events, and that these events occur more frequently than previously thought, with almost three impact events, to population centres, per decade in the past 100 years. …”

The development and application of fish scale waste for tissue engineering applications : waste-to-resource conversion of resource resilient materials
Published 2017“…Therefore in this thesis, fish scale-derived collagen (FSCol) and fish scale-derived HA (FSHA) were extracted from different fish species and the potential of the extracted products for various TE applications were explored. Findings from the studies demonstrated that Type I FSCol was successfully extracted using a modified acid solubilization extraction method with preserved structural quality (i.e. retention of triple helical structures) where snakehead scale-derived collagen (SHCol) exhibited significant higher (p < 0.05) thermal stability as compared to other species. …”

Global, regional, and national burden of stroke and its risk factors, 1990–2021: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021
Published 2024“…We also calculated burden of stroke attributable to 23 risk factors and six risk clusters (air pollution, tobacco smoking, behavioural, dietary, environmental, and metabolic risks) at the global and regional levels (21 GBD regions and Socio-demographic Index [SDI] quintiles), using the standard GBD methodology. 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs) for each individual future estimate were derived from the 2·5th and 97·5th percentiles of distributions generated from propagating 500 draws through the multistage computational pipeline.
Findings
In 2021, stroke was the third most common GBD level 3 cause of death (7·3 million [95% UI 6·6–7·8] deaths; 10·7% [9·8–11·3] of all deaths) after ischaemic heart disease and COVID-19, and the fourth most common cause of DALYs (160·5 million [147·8–171·6] DALYs; 5·6% [5·0–6·1] of all DALYs). …”
