Nitrite accumulation and anammox bacterial niche partitioning in Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge sediments
Published 2024“…Nitrite accumulation in the two AMOR cores co-occurs with a niche partitioning between two anammox bacterial families (Candidatus Bathyanammoxibiaceae and Candidatus Scalinduaceae), likely dependent on ammonium availability. Through reconstructing and comparing the dominant anammox genomes (Ca. …”

Methodological, political and legal issues in the assessment of the effects of nanotechnology on human health
Published 2019“…Scientific challenges include the array of physicochemical parameters and ENM production conditions, the lack of universally accepted definitions of ENMs and nanotechnology workers, and the lack of information about modes of action, target organs and likely dose–response functions of ENMs. Standardisation of data collection and harmonisation of research protocols are needed to eliminate misclassification of exposures and health effects. …”

Rapid removal of chloroform, carbon tetrachloride and trichloroethylene in water by aluminum-iron alloy particles
Published 2020“…Alloying Al with Fe enhances reactivity towards chlorinated hydrocarbons' degradation and the enhancement is likely the consequence of galvanic effects between different phases (Al, Fe and intermetallic Al-Fe compounds such as Al13Fe4, Fe3Al and FeAl2) and catalytic role of these intermetallic Al-Fe compounds. …”

Pyrroloquinoline quinone aza-crown ether complexes as biomimetics for lanthanide and calcium dependent alcohol dehydrogenases
Published 2021“…We show that when studying biomimetics for MDH, larger metal ions and those with lower charge in this case promote the dehydrogenation reaction more effectively and that this is likely an effect of the ligand design which must be considered when studying biomimetics. …”

ESBL and AmpC β-lactamase encoding genes in E. coli from pig and pig farm workers in Vietnam and their association with mobile genetic elements
Published 2021“…The isolates carrying the plasmids, even those with plasmids of similar types, showed wide genetic variation with high number of SNPs, suggesting horizontal spread of plasmids into different clonal lines. Their virulence profiles did not confirm to known pathotypes, suggesting that unrelated commensals are a main reservoir for ESBL and AmpC β-lactamases in both humans and pigs. …”

Performance Guarantees for Spectral Initialization in Rotation Averaging and Pose-Graph SLAM
Published 2024“…Our results reveal the critical role that spectral graph-theoretic properties of the measurement network play in controlling estimation accuracy; moreover, as a by-product of our analysis we obtain new bounds on the estimation error for the maximum likelihood estimators in SLAM and RA, which are likely to be of independent interest. Finally, we show experimentally that our spectral estimator is very effective in practice, producing initializations of comparable or superior quality at lower computational cost compared to existing state-of-the-art techniques.…”
