A new model for supraglacial hydrology evolution and drainage for the Greenland Ice Sheet (SHED v1.0) by P. Gantayat, A. F. Banwell, A. A. Leeson, A. A. Leeson, J. M. Lea, D. Petersen, N. Gourmelen, X. Fettweis

    Published 2023-10-01
“…Understanding where, when, and how much meltwater is transferred to the bed is important because variability in meltwater supply to the bed can increase ice flow speeds, potentially impacting the hypsometry of the ice sheet in grounded sectors, and iceberg discharge to the ocean. Here we present a new, physically based, supraglacial hydrology model for the GrIS that is able to simulate (a) surface meltwater routing and SGL filling; (b) rapid meltwater drainage to the ice sheet bed via the hydrofracture of surface crevasses both in and outside of SGLs; (c) slow SGL drainage via overflow in supraglacial meltwater channels; and, by offline coupling with a second model, (d) the freezing and unfreezing of SGLs from autumn to spring. …”

    NEMO–ICB (v1.0): interactive icebergs in the NEMO ocean model globally configured at eddy-permitting resolution by R. Marsh, V. O. Ivchenko, N. Skliris, S. Alderson, G. R. Bigg, G. Madec, A. T. Blaker, Y. Aksenov, B. Sinha, A. C. Coward, J. Le Sommer, N. Merino, V. B. Zalesny

    Published 2015-05-01
“…Substantial physical and dynamical responses to icebergs, throughout the global ocean, are explained by rapid propagation of density anomalies from high-to-low latitudes. Complementary to the baseline model used here, three prototype modifications to NEMO–ICB are also introduced and discussed.…”

Definition and impact of a quality index for radar-based reference measurements in the H-SAF precipitation product validation by A. Rinollo, G. Vulpiani, S. Puca, P. Pagliara, J. Kaňák, E. Lábó, L'. Okon, E. Roulin, P. Baguis, E. Cattani, S. Laviola, V. Levizzani

    Published 2013-10-01
“…The precipitation field derived by radar data was compared with the PR-OBS-3 precipitation product, with varying thresholds of quality index: the impact of the introduction of the quality index defined on the statistical results of the satellite product validation as well as their sensitivity to the threshold choice were thus evaluated. Results show that PR-RMSE (a relative RMSE here introduced) is reduced from values between 2.5 and 3 to values around 1 when the quality threshold is increased from 0 (no threshold) to 0.8. …”
