Summary:To cope with the demands of variety of peoducts, radical setup time reduction is essential. The objective of this project is to reduce the setup time using GT and SMED. Tje literature study, has been done to study the relevance of GT nd SMED as a core element in reducing setup times. A case study was conducted at GPM ENG. Sd. Bhd.. The problems identified being in the tool presetting, collet adjustments and long trial tuns. Some suggestion and ercommendations based on the SMED concepts and techniques are made. An intermediate plate fixture was designed to enable tool presetting externally. time reduction form 30 minutes to 7 minutes is possible in this presetting. This presetting also eliminates the need for NC part program modifications. Other recommendations involve redesigning the collet head for rapid adjustment. The overall setup time reduction after improvement is 1/3 of the present setup time. A study was also conducted on the layout. The layout improvements, will reduce the number of operators to half.
