Summary:Based on the analysis of existing sources and educational historiographic production in Goiás, the aim of this article is to analyse teaching pratices from the standpoint of legal prescription and to emphasize the actions praticsed by teachers in their teaching activies wich were not explicitly mentioned in the legislation. The research refers to the period from 1835 to 1893. The process of institutionalization of the primary education was straightly related to the social demand for the acquisition of the skills of reading, writing, counting, and praying.
