description In the current educational landscape, one that is based on the development of competences, it is necessary to make a reflection that leads to an overall restatement of educational fact. In order to achieve this, the theoretical tool proposed as the most suitable in the field of compulsory music education is the pragmatism paradigm, since the emphasis that is to be given to certain aspects like contextualization or action, among others, cannot be addressed only from a formalist view. Therefore, the concept of competence is used, after analyzing formalism, to support the argument that pragmatism is the most suitable frame of reference to reflect and refocus music teaching.
