Summary:Abstract The objective of the research was to determine the implications of the change from face-to-face to online education in university students, due to the global health crisis caused by COVID-19. The study design was observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional. It involved 400 students from different undergraduate careers of the two largest public higher education institutions in the city of Riobamba: Escuela Superior Politécnica de Chimborazo (ESPOCH) and Universidad Nacional de Chimborazo (UNACH). Data were collected through an online questionnaire sent to students via email and social networks. Four dimensions were investigated that measure implications at the psycho-emotional, academic, access and management of Tics, as well as general perceptions. The most relevant results indicate that a large percentage of students have experienced changes at the emotional, educational, and social levels, and have also seen their academic performance decrease with online classes. Regarding Internet access, they report that they often have a good Internet connection, and more than half consider the system adopted by their institution to be satisfactory. The current health crisis has left and is leaving many lessons and challenges still to be met, it is not known exactly how long higher education institutions, which were characterized by their basically face-to-face system, will have to face this challenge of online education, but work must continue to strengthen pedagogical skills and digital competencies of all actors in the higher education system.
