Description
Summary:Individual pension benefits are significantly gendered. The causes of this are known: the female employment rate is low, moreover women have discontinuous professional careers and they reach high and well-remunerated positions less than men. The aim of this work is to provide an analysis of the gender pension gap phenomenon in Italy depending on a large range of variation sources. First we define and describe the gender pension gap. Secondly we examine some sources of variation concerning labour market (gender differences linked to participation in the workforce, to contracts, to positions and wages) and features of pension and welfare systems. Finally, using the AGING dataset (sample of 2502 Italian workers), we look at the subjective dimensions that mediate action (the preferences that guide the women’s choices and the beliefs about the means available to them).
