Histone variant H3.3 residue S31 is essential for Xenopus gastrulation regardless of the deposition pathway

Replicative and non-replicative H3 variants have different cell cycle regulation and incorporation modes. Here, the authors identify H3.3 S31 deposition as key at Xenopus gastrulation, independently of the pathways; and characterize H3.3 S31 phosphorylation importance for the underlying mechanisms.
