description | This article presents the foundations of an online English course in a university context intended for Economics and Management students, as well as evidence of the course’s success, based on student testimonies, according to a framework called “Didactics Integrating Online Informal Practices”. Research in the Online Informal Learning of English (OILE) field (Dressman et Sadler, 2020 ; Sockett, 2014 ; Toffoli, 2020) has shown that informal online practices, such as watching TV series and films (Toffoli and Sockett, 2010) are widespread among students, and that the use of profession-based fiction (Petit, 2000) as a pedagogical resource would be a useful tool for the acquisition of specialist vocabulary. It therefore seems relevant to take these informal activities into account within a formal context, as they could have a positive impact on students' motivation and autonomy. The course's main principle is the instrumentalization and didactisation of the contents used by students for their informal practices in their spare time, and the course's design takes the students' role as language users into account, by valuing peer interaction and learning. |
