On the Motives behind the Chinese Leadership's Decision to Pursue a Nuclear Programme

The article questions the realist assumption that China's nuclear ambitions were primarily aimed at providing military security and presents evidence that the Chinese military and political elite was motivated by the desire to form a national identity and make up for the grievances of the past.
