description | This article looks at a newly emerging factor which is influencing parents’ expectations of the school system: academic coaching. Different fieldwork methods were used: semi-directive interviews with coaches and with “coached” individuals, participant observation and statistical analyses of “coached” individuals’ files, which are held by the « coaches ». After examining the coaches’ definition of their activity, this article focuses on the type of people who receive academic coaching. Who does academic coaching appeal to? Coaches target certain types of people and this is obvious when we analyse their discourse, etc. interviews. Academic coaching is one strategy which parents, students and other « coached » individuals use to deal with an increasingly competitive academic context. They are receptive to discourse which criticizes the school system. We argue in this paper that there is a correlation between on the one hand, their choice of coaching as a strategy and, on the other hand, their level of education, family background, and socio-economic class. |
