description | The purpose of this study was to determine the special needs characteristics in the content and layout features of children’s books. A descriptive survey method was employed. The sample comprised 17 illustrated story books, which contained 27 stories written for children aged eight years and younger. The researcher developed a data collection instrument that comprised two sections. The instrument evaluated the content and layout features of the books with 77 questions. Furthermore, the expertise of professors engaged in special education was obtained. The interrater reliability method was employed to assess the reliability of the instrument. The results revealed that of the items that assessed layout, 15 were sufficient, one was partially sufficient, and 15 items were insufficient. Furthermore, of the items that evaluated content, 25 were sufficient, two were partially sufficient, and 19 were insufficient. Recommendations for practice are made. |
