Summary: | This study aimed to find out the reasons why teachers of primary school teach
punctuation out of context, emphasising the usage of punctuation marks in
rather isolated sentences and with inaccurate information. The sample had
160 teachers, who were taken from the kindergarten to the third grade of
primary school, either in the public or private sector in Recife and Teresina
(Brasil). The results showed that, on the one hand, the teachers seemed to be
used to an oral style punctuation, and, on the other, they did not seem to
realise punctuation as a powerful syntactic source to build texture.
