Description
Summary:The purpose of this study was to investigate the acute effects of Square-Stepping Exercise (SSE) on cohesion among sedentary young adults in Singapore. Globally, one of the key issues in the exercise promotion scene is the unpromising exercise adherence rate. Previous studies have illustrated the positive effects of cohesion on exercise adherence and group-based exercise has been shown to enhance various aspects of cohesion. The SSE program encourages social interactions and task bonding among participants. The present study hypothesized that SSE promotes the participants’ cohesion level to a greater extent than its active control condition (ACC), aerobics. A group of 17 healthy and sedentary adults (5 male, 12 female; M age = 22.8, SD = 1.11) were recruited and underwent both the SSE and ACC conditions. SSE resulted in a significantly higher individual attraction to group social (ATG-S) dimension and group integration around task (GI-T) dimensions of cohesion when compared to ACC. In conclusion, SSE was more effective in increasing cohesion than ACC among sedentary young adults in Singapore.
