description The English translation of the 20th National Congress report has decent language and accurate expression. It is a model of English translation of Chinese political texts which helps to better tell China’s stories and make China’s voice heard. The skopos rule, coherence rule and loyalty rule in Functional Theories of Translation play a theoretical guiding role in its translation. Based on Functional Theories of Translation, this dissertation takes Xi Jinping's report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China as an example to explore the characteristics, methods and techniques of political text translation. Through the analysis of the translation of the 20th National Congress Report, this dissertation found translation characteristics and translation methods that are conducive to effective communication and cross-cultural understanding. Following the Skopos Theory in the translation process can enable translators to determine the translation strategies, skills, methods, etc. The translation of political texts often uses translation methods such as literal translation, liberal translation, recreation, and translation techniques such as shift to enable the translation to better convey the information of the source text. Translators can effectively bridge the gap between language and culture and promote cross-cultural communication by combining Functional Theories of Translation. By shedding light on the specific challenges and methods involved in translating political texts within the framework of Functional Theories of Translation, this dissertation contributes to a deeper understanding of the intricate dynamics between language, ideology, and translation in the realm of political communication.
