Isotonic drinks were low carbohydrate contained softdrinks (contained less than 10% carbohydrate) and little amount of electrolyte.There are differences in salivary pH changes after consuming isotonic drinks with various carbohydrate concentration. These differences were caused by lowered salivary buffer capacity due to high carbohydrate diet. Carbohydrate addition could increase lactic acid concentration in plaque liquid. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes of salivary pH after consuming isotonic drinks with 9 % carbohydrate content compared to 5 % carbohydrate content in dental students of Universitas Gadjah Mada . Subjects of this study were 30 dental students which randomly divided into treatment group and control group. Ten dental students from control group drank mineral water. Treatment group was divided into two sub group : 10 dental students drank isotonic drinks with 5% carbohydrate content and 10 dental students drank isotonic drinks with 9% carbohydrate content. Subjects were instructed to drink 100 ml drinks for 5 seconds. Salivary pH measurements were done twice, on 5th minute and 15th minute after drinking. Data was analyzed by using ANAVA test and continued by LSD Post Hoc Test. The result of this study showed that isotonic drinks with 9% carbohydrate content lowered salivary pH more significantly than isotonic drinks with 5% carbohydrate content after 5 minute and 15 minute drinking. It is noted that salivary pH changes were more significant on 15 minutes after drinking isotonic drinks with 5% carbohydrate content and 9% carbohydrate content.
