Existence of mangrove forest is under considerable pressure as a result of
a serious increase in population and economic pressure for land. Rehabilitation is
an attempt to prevent the degradation of mangrove forests. Rehabilitation
activities are considered as a cost centre in development of a region, so
rehabilitation activities are not considered as main priority. Benefits of mangrove
forest existence was under valuation, because it was just based on the direct use
value that have market prices, such as timber, while the externality of indirect use
value that hasn�t market prices, such as a function of spawning areas, erosion
preventing areas, and carbon storage areas are not considered. This study aims to
determine the estimated economic value of mangrove forests.
The research uses a 26.13 Ha mangrove forest area located in Mojo
Village. The data for measuring of the potential stands are taken with systematic
sampling with random start method using 0.5% IS and sampled using 10m x10m
square plots. Economic valuation for direct use value is used market prices, while
indirect use value uses earning loss and compensation of carbon storage approach.
The result of this study shows the direct use of mangrove forest as timber
producer, while the indirect use of mangrove forest would be as spawning areas,
abrasion prevention areas, and carbon storage areas. Quantitatively in one
rotation, direct use value worth Rp 2.716.958,00/ha when mangrove forest is
functioned as timber producer, while the indirect use value of the forest would
worth Rp 258.790.318,00/ha which includes Rp 159.779.488,00/ha worth as
spawning area, Rp 66.445.293,00/ha from the abrasion preventing area, and Rp
32.545.537,00/ha gained from carbon storage. Further analysis in one rotation,
NPV value as much as Rp 251.429.496,00/ha, BCR value equal to 25.95 and IRR
41.93% which indicate a profitable economic gain from the rehabilitation
activities.
