description ABSTRACT Melaleuca cajuputi Powell, commonly referred to as cajuput (minyak kayu putih) is the source of the medicinal cajuput oil which is used as a balm or ointment. Indonesia is the major supplier of the oil which is extracted from the leaf by steam distillation. The oil is produced from plantations in Java and from natural stands in Maluku province. The seed for the original planting which is the basis for the present cajuput oil industry in Java, is reported to have been procured from Burn Island in Maluku province by the Dutch in the 1.8th century. The survey was conducted in Maluku province from November to December 1995 by collecting seeds and leaves for each sample-trees. The material for herbarium was identified at the Australian National Herbarium_ The research was done to study the distribution of natural stand of M. cajuputi and other Melaleuca. The natural distribution ofM. cajuputi Powell in Maluku province is discontinuous extending from Buru, Ceram, Ambon Aru and Tanimbar islands. According to the taxonomic study, this species is classified into two sub species, namely M. cajuputi ssp. cajuputi, and M. cajuputi ssp. pla4,phylla. Among of these, M. cajuputi ssp. cajuputi is noted for the production of Cajuput oil. Melaleuca cajuputi ssp. cajuputi Powell, distributed in Buru, Ceram and Ambon islands was found in pure stand. The other species and sub species of Melaleucas i.e.: M. cajuputi ssp. platyphylla, M. leucadendra, Mvirldiflora and M. dealbata were also found in Ambon, Aru and Tanimbar islands in association between them and other species. Keywords: Cajuput oil, Melaleuca cajuputi, natural distribution.
