This study describes the role of psychological empowerment as mediating in influence of perceived transformational leadership on organizational commitment. First tested the perceived transformational leadership has positive affects on affective and normative organizational commitment and negatively affect the commitment of continuant. Further tested the influence of perceived transformational leadership with organizational commitment with psycological empowerment as mediating.
Respondent in this study were employees of banks with a total 120 respondents. From the distribution of 120 questionnaires, 117 questionnaires return (response rate 97 %) and feasible to use. The employees were asked to provide feedback regarding percieved transformational leadership as much as 12 items of questions, as many as 16 items of organizational commitment and psychological empowerment questions as much as 12 items of questions. Model testing using hierarchical multiple regression.
The result of this research indicate that psychological empowerment partially mediated the influence of perceived transformational leadership on organizational commitment. Perceived transformational leadership has a positive influence on affective, normative, and continuant commitment. This finding differs from the opinion of Simon (1999) that the perceived transformational leadership has negative effect to continuant commitment. The study also found that there are significant psychological empowerment positively related to continuant commitment. The results of this research support research by Wiley (1991) who found that psychological empowerment has a positive relationship with organizational commitment.
The implications of this research can be used as a guide to help managers better understand to manage human resources in organizations through transformational leadership style and psychological empowerment to enhance organizational commitment of subordinates. |
