Summary: | Background. Clinical components are very important in the curriculum of
nursing education. One of the barriers in learning is psychological stress
caused by many tasks, financial issues, exams, and lecturers. Severe stress
may reduce the effectiveness and productivity of students in the learning
environment. To get success in the education of profession, nursing students
can be supported by an academic supervisor. Students who had problems
should meet with an academic supervisor, but the guidance could not come
well.
bjective. This study aimed to find out the effectiveness of mentoring training
of academic counselors on student�s perceptions about the role of academic
counselors and the level of distress among the students of nursing profession
of Universitas Muhammadiyah Semarang.
Methods. This study used a quasi experimental and the design of this study
was pre test and post test design with control group.
Results. Hypothesis test result indicated that the p value was 0.31 at an
alpha of 0.05, so that the value of p value was more than alpha. Student�s
supervision by academic counselors who received mentoring training was
less effective in reduction of distress. Hypothesis test results indicated that
the p value was 0.00 at an alpha of 0.05, so that the value of p value was less
than the alpha value. The role of supervision by the academic counselors
who received mentoring training was more effective than those without the
training.
Conclusion. Student�s supervision by academic counselors who received
mentoring training was less effective in reduction of distress. The role of
supervision by the academic counselors who received mentoring training was
more effective than those without the training. It is recommended that
academic counselors should continually develop themselves and maintain
quality.
